CHOI YI LI

Lead Special Education Teacher

Yili (Elly) has had more than 8 years of experience in working with neurodivergent children and their families. She holds a Diploma in Special Education from the National Institute of Education.

Yili’s interest in working with special needs individuals began when she joined a volunteer programme with MINDS in 2012 while pursuing her bachelor’s degree. Upon graduation, she entered St. Andrew’s Autism School as a teacher, teaching literacy, numeracy, daily living, social emotional and vocational skills for more than 7 years. During this time, she also worked closely with families to address the varied challenges faced by the students at home. She has also worked as a special needs private tutor, through which she gained experience in teaching the foundational skills required to access the mainstream Primary 1 curriculum.

She holds the Certificate in Autism from the Autism Resource Centre and is skilled in implementing autism-specific approaches in the classroom, such as TEACCH, explicit instruction and systematic instruction. She is also trained in PECS and has extensive experience in helping children develop functional communication skills through AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) in classroom activities.

Yili believes in creating a joyful classroom where children feel safe and motivated to explore and learn. In particular, she also has a keen interest in helping neurodivergent children develop their strengths and build essential life skills. She enjoys learning about new developments in the field and is eager to implement new strategies in the classroom.

She is fluent in English, and conversant in Mandarin and basic Japanese.
