This online training course provides the ideal starting point for developing your skills with children under seven who stammer. Palin PCI is an evidenced-based approach for early stammering which is widely used across the UK and internationally.

Palin Parent Child Interaction therapy is an early intervention approach that was designed for stammering and has been adapted for use with children with other speech and language needs, and other adults e.g. education staff/carers.

The transferable skills taught in this course include engaging parents in the assessment and therapy process; communicating complex and/or sensitive information to parents; using video feedback to develop parents’ confidence and skills; and addressing wider child management issues with parents such as emotional and behavioural issues. These skills are applicable across a wide range of clinical contexts and caseloads.

Qualified speech and language therapists and speech and language therapy students in their final year of training.

All therapists will be qualified to carry out Palin PCI following the two-day training, provided they are a qualified Speech and Language Therapist and they complete the full two day course.

Participants will receive a certificate following the course of 17 hours Continued Professional Development. This includes the two-day training as well as three pre course webinars.

Victoria Cummings

Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist
MSc., MRCSLT, Reg. HCPC.

Victoria graduated from University College London with an MSc in Speech and Language Sciences in 2009. Prior to this she studied for a BA Honours in English Studies at Nottingham University. After qualifying, Victoria worked in South West Essex and Westminster, London in a range of community clinics, primary and secondary schools, children’s centres and nurseries before moving to the Michael Palin Centre to further develop her interest in stammering. She has worked at the Michael Palin Centre since 2013.

Victoria is part of the Centre’s training team, running workshops for speech and language therapists within across the globe. She has presented at National CEN study days, the British Stammering Association Conference and the Oxford Dysfluency Conference. She has served on the committee of the South East and London Stammering (SEALS) Clinical Excellence Network (CEN) as Membership Secretary and Chair.

Victoria has an interest in Solution Focused Brief Therapy and the use of Mindfulness-Based Approaches in therapy with people who stammer. She works with children, young people and adults.

  • A brief research update – current research into the factors contributing to stammering; risk factors for young children who stammer; interaction styles & stammering
